SUMMARY:The Brad Ashby Memorial Lecture 2025
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:

Most terrestrial animals naturally accumulate electrostatic char
ges, meaning that they will generate electric forces that interact with oth
er charges in their environment, including those on or within other organis
ms. Join us on a journey through the often unnoticed ecological role of sta
tic electricity in nature. Dr Sam England will discuss how electrostatic fo
rces attract pollen onto butterflies and moths, allowing them to be more ef
ficient pollinators; how the charge of tick hosts like cows, dogs, and huma
ns, pulls ticks across air gaps to make them better parasites; and finally
how many insects can detect static electricity, and use it to sense the app
roach of their predators.

Dr Sam J. England first studied for a Maste
rs degree in Physics with Australian Study at the University of Exeter, UK
and the University of Wollongong, Australia. Then, he moved into the biolog
ical realm, working with Prof Daniel Robert on electrostatic ecology and co
mpleting his PhD in Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK in
2023, where he won the award for best PhD thesis in the faculty. Currently
, Sam is a postdoctoral researcher at the Museum of Natural History in Berl
in, Germany, working with Dr Lauren Sumner-Rooney on the eyes and other sen
ses of spiders.

Brad Ashby Memorial Lecture

This annu

iety as a joint venture in memory of Char
les Bradwin Ashby (1920 - 1994). Brad was a prominent member of both organi
sations and in 1985 he proposed the joint meetings which have successfully
continued to this day, and since 2020 have been in a virtual format.

This online event is being supported by the Biological Recording Company. I
t is free to attend and open to all, however, booking is essential:
